Dr Leslyn Lewis, the Member of Parliament from Haldimand-Norfolk, responded to the comments by Pope Leo, while he was in Lourdes France, concerning euthanasia and assisted suicide. Dr Lewis stated on X:
Dr Leslyn Lewis (MP)
Every human life has dignity, especially in moments of vulnerability.Thank you Dr Lewis for making this statement within Canada's difficult political reality. You always stand up for what you believe.
Compassion means caring for people, supporting recovery, relieving suffering, and ensuring that no one feels abandoned when they are at their most vulnerable.
When people see death as the answer to social conditions such as poverty, homelessness or isolation, we should ask whether we have failed to provide the care and support they need to live with dignity.
As the Pope warns, we must not allow legalized death to become a substitute for compassion.
