Executive Director, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition
Bill C-218, the bill to prevent euthanasia for mental illness as a sole criteria was debated on December 5, 2025 and September 23, 2026 and will go to a vote on October 7.
We need at least 30 Liberal MP's to support Bill C-218.
In March 2021, the Canada's parliament expanded the euthanasia law by passing Bill C-7. One of the expansions in the law permitted euthanasia for a mental illness alone. but, at that time, the government declared a two-year moratorium to provide time to prepare for the change.
The government delayed the implementation of euthanasia for mental illness, as a sole criteria, three times with implementation now approved for March 17, 2027.
Tamara Jansen (MP - Cloverdale - Langley City) introduced private members Bill C-218 to prevent euthanasia (MAiD) for mental illness as the sole criteria.
Bill C-218 excludes mental illness from being defined as a "grievous and irremediable medical condition" for the purposes of MAiD. Bill C-218, if passed will prevent MAID for mental illness as a sole criteria.
The vote on Bill C-218 is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
There are several ways that you can help Bill C-218 be passed:
- Sign the petition in support of Bill C-218 (Link).
- It is easiest to call your Member of Parliament. The phone number is part of the MP contact information. (Member of Parliament List).
- Contact your Member of Parliament (MP) by email and share your support for Bill C-218. Contact your Member of Parliament at: (Member of Parliament List).
- Refer to the information in the Bill C-218 handout for Members of Parliament (Link).
- Send your personal stories about living with mental illness to info@epcc.ca.
- Share your story about living with mental illness, as Andrew Lawton (MP) did: I got better. Support Bill C-218 prevent MAiD for Mental Illness (Link).
Remember. The majority of Canadians do not support MAiD for mental illness.
Mario Canseco, the President of Research Co, was published by Business Intelligence for BC with polling indicating that the majority of Canadians do not support (MAiD) euthanasia for mental illness. Conseco reported that:
At this point, only an adult with a grievous and irremediable medical condition can seek medical assistance in dying in Canada. An expansion that would cover mental illness is expected to come into place in March 2027. Just over two in five Canadians (42 per cent, down one point) believe mental illness is a good reason for a person to request medical assistance in dying.
To pass, Bill C-218 needs Member of Parliament from all political parties to support it. Keys to speaking to your Member of Parliament:
- Only comment on MAiD for mental illness alone. Bill C-218 only deals with that issue. There are many concerns, but mixing issues weakens your position.
- Contact your Member of Parliament, even if you know his/her position on MAiD.
- Ask others, including groups that you belong to, to contact the Member of Parliament.

How do we support this bill? No to euthanasia.
What criteria is used to define what mental illness is and who decides who is mentally I’ll or not? IMO those who are promoting this travesty are themselves mentally I’ll and need to step up to that plate.
YES OF COURSE THOSE WHO PROMOTE KILLING, EUTHANASIA/ASSISTED SUICIDE, AND HOMICIDE ARE MENTALLY ILL!!! AND YES THEY SHOULD STEP UP TO THAT TERMINOLOGY!!! SOMEONE SHOULD ASK THEM WHEN WILL THEY THEMSELVES KILL THEMSELVES SINCE THEY ADVOCATE IT SO MUCH FOR OTHERS TO SEE WHAT THEIR RESPONSES WILL BE??? AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THEIR LIVES ARE VERY SELFISH FOR RECEIVING LOTS OF MONEY TO PROMOTE KILLING AND HOMICIDE!!!
Mental illness is a very nebulous phrase. If being crushed and oppressed by circumstances in one's life, outside of one's control - then I have been there! Numerous times!
Finding joy and meaning and purpose in LIFE is a far better remedy, than taking that life off the earth.
I am a 73-year-old female. My mother had a severe mental illness received many shock treatments that actually eventually put her over the edge and they thought she would be in the hospital for the rest of her life. They found a medication that worked for her. She is extremely intelligent woman who raised 11 children. She babysat my children her grandchildren as well she lived to be 80 years old. My youngest son is bipolar as well and fortunately has a psychiatrist. When my mother was sick, and my children were young, I would just very calmly to them grandma‘s not well right now. They always understood and loved her unconditionally.
Yes; yes; yes!! Spread comment!!
Woe to those who call evil good or call good evil. All life is sacred and only our Lord Jesus Christ has the right to end a life that He created. Prayer is the part we are given in all cases along with those who have been Divinely given the right to end a life. Mental illness is not one of those reasons to end a life.
My MP, Jacob Mantle - York/Durham, is definitely pro-life and pro-family. I have contacted him and his office staff. He will not support Bill C-218. I have also written letters and contacted other MPs on this and other Life issues and bills.
You are spot on..👍
As Tamara Jansen said in her speech at Second Hour of Debate of C-218, the AMAD Committee Report considers “Mental Illness” and “Mental Disorder” to be practically synonymous and those two phrases are not at all synonymous. The AMAD Committee Report chose to use Mental Disorder and if that phrase replaces Mental Illness in C-218 because they are “similar” both Quebec and Alberta will challenge the Commons vote if it passes.
Look up the definitions yourself: mental illness is merely a subset of mental disorder.
OMG. We are working on this, Alex. Please everyone reading this, keep those MP's phones ringing and leave a message for life. This is our priority for the next nine days.Thank you all,for the work you do to maintain a culture of LIFE. Peace to all.
Bill C-218 should NOT be supported. Mental illness, as hard as it can be, can be a perfectly legitimate reason for MAiD. Peope with a mental illness are capable of making informed decisions. This has been proven for years in countries such as the Netherlands. They have a strict protocol to assess whether somebody with a mental illness is qualified AND can make an informed decision. Does this mean that everybody with a mental illness should be allowed MAiD? Of course not. That is the same that not just 'anybody' can apply for MAiD. There is a reason why there are strict eligibility requirements and a proper due process. It is ethically and morally wrong to prevent MAiD for people with a mental illness as their sole underlying reason as long as a due process is in place.
Bill C-218 should NOT be supported. It is ethically and morally wrong to prevent MAiD for people with a mental illness as their sole underlying reason IF they are found eligible for MAiD. Part of being eligible is making an informed decision when mentally capable even if they are technically mentally ill. These two are NOT mutually exclusive. Countries like the Netherlands have shown how this can be successfully assessed. Does that mean that everybody with a mental illness can just apply for MAiD? Of course not! Well, they can try to apply but unless they pass the eligibility requirements, they simply will not be approved.
Many homeless people are in their circumstances because of mental illness, lack of supports, and many have turned to drugs and alcohol. This government has first legalized drugs that exacerbate mental illness, and now the country’s vulnerable homeless mentally ill will be offered euthanasia. Imagine the optics here: they’re going to be “solving the homeless problem,” by offering euthanasia and then killing them. What people will see is that there are far less homeless people and thank the Liberals when really it was a legal doctor assisted cleansing of undesirables.
Gandalf, there are better ways to assist people than by killing them. Our beautiful country is not without significant problems, but MAID is not the way forward. It suggests that as soon as people become a "burden" to the system, we should offer them a way to exit the system. Instead, we should be working toward supporting those who are sick, both mentally and physically. Support them, treat them, and provide meangful services to them and their families. As you pointed out, not just anybody can apply for MAID, but when principles are set they can become very slippery slopes, and this one is already covered with ice.
