Slovenia is debating assisted suicide.

Alex Schadenberg
Executive Director, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition

A Slovenian group called Silver Thread collected signatures and are now demanding the legalization of assisted suicide. The bill proposed by Silver Thread was introduced in the Slovenian legislature.

STA news in Slovenia reported on June 18 that:

Ombudsman Peter Svetina has raised a number of issues regarding a bill introducing euthanasia and urged caution. Among other things, the Ombudsman's office cannot be the body of oversight for euthanasia, he stressed.
The Ombusdsman brought up concerns with oversight of euthanasia. A June 9 STA news article indicated that Slovenia remains divided on euthanasia.
A discussion on a civil initiative-sponsored bill on assisted suicide underlined on Friday the divide between the bill's proponents and representatives of the medical community. While the former argued for patients' autonomy in a decision that is now in the hands of doctors, the latter see bill is seriously flawed.
STA news reported on May 9 that the Slovenia medical ethics commission opposed the assisted suicide bill and stated that the bill "entails a high level of ethical risk."
