Ontario doctors will leave the province if forced to participate in "assisted dying."

n May 18, the Ontario legislature rejected Bill 129, the Regulated Health Professions Amendment Act, a bill that was sponsored by Jeff Yurek (MLA) to provide conscience protection for health care workers in Ontario.

The Toronto Sun reported that a press conference organized by the Concerned Ontario Doctors and the Coalition for Healthcare and Conscience that:

Many Ontario doctors and nurses working in palliative care say their objection to playing a role in assisted suicides may force them to leave the medical profession.
Many physicians "don’t want to make a referral that would result in the death of a patient,”
Dr. Kulvinder Gill said, adding forcing medical workers to participate strips them of their conscience rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. “Access (to assist dying) must not depend on a physician having a role.”

Dozens of medical professionals attended the press conference. The Toronto Sun article quoted some of the medical professionals as stating:

Dr. Jane Dobson said she is at a crossroads because she won’t make referrals for assisted dying.
“There are palliative-care providers who will be forced to leave (the profession) because of the conscience,” Dobson said.
Pharmacist James Brown says he believes drugs should be used to treat diseases — not kill someone.
“They’re never intended to take a patient’s life. Knowing a medication is meant to take a life goes against my core values,” Brown said.
Doctors, nurses and other medical professionals must never be forced to be complicit in acts of killing their patients.

As a retired physician, I commend the courage of the nurses and doctors in Ontario and Canada for their efforts to protect conscience rights of all caregivers. Palliative care must be expanded to provide comfort and dignity in all aspects of the end of natural life and should not include assisted dying or directly killing your patient.

Stop all the BS, everyone knows doctors and nurses deliberately kill patients as well as first responders. They all have a brotherhood mentality that crimes and intentional accidents by the brotherhood have to be hidden. What do you think a risk management department is in a hospital, to protect patients from risk, it's there only to protect them from civil and criminal liability, when the state comes along and make death statutes like here in washington state it's saying to doctors and hospitals they can kill and the state will look the other way and not prosecute for alleged wrongs, It's a win win combination, the state corporations that are run for profit save money so state officials and lawmakers can put $ in their pockets while reducing doctors and hospitals malpractice since death with dignity statutes eliminates all responsibility for deliberate murder without informed consent, in my wife's case a catholic hospital got caught forcing my wife to sign a DNR when she was incompetent and drugged and unable to realize what she was signing. The hospital never told us of the DNR while lying to another hospital saying she was in excruciating pain and dying from leukemia and that the husband was going to shoot responders, they were all lies, responders punctured her internal jugular vein and hid the fact until it was later reported in an autopsy. The case is in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals https://www.change.org/p/hastening-death-is-murder
