In my lifetime, when a person speaks of suicide, the immediate response is to assist this person in getting psychiatric help. Now the new trend...help a so called "mentally competent" person by giving them the option to receive a prescription for medication so that he or she can self-ingest to die. God help all of us.
As the last comment said "God help all of us." We are a culture in decay - crumbling from within. We no longer have moral fibre to bind us together - every person is a god unto him or herself. We make up words to colour and disguise the truth - and when we do so, then murder is no longer murder. Wrong is no longer wrong. And conscience becomes like scrambled eggs.
Every so often a court sanctioned killer becomes sick at heart. There is a glimmer of hope. Who is going to be around to heal the healers who have become murderers - doing violence to the core of their beings.
We need to hear the Lord's call to take up our cross and follow him. We need to relearn the redemptive value of suffering - a sharing in the cross of Christ. We need to see with new eyes. We need to see the dignity in suffering - being one with Jesus in the Garden of Olives; the life given to others by carrying our cross.
Today my mother would be put to death with the excuse that she has no dignity just lying on her bed unable to do anything at all for herself! This was her state for the last 3 years of her life. For the 13 years before this she deteriorated inch by inch with Alzheimer's. She snuggled into my father's shoulder a year before her death, while he sang a love song to her - one he sang when they were courting many years before! My father told me after her death that it was through her long years of sickness that he came to realize what it truly means to love! Both Mum and Dad had dignity in suffering! I grew in love, compassion and firm belief that suffering is a gift given to us for the good of all mankind.
Jeremiah, thank you for your beautiful description of your parents' love for each other. Yes, those who die with dignity are the ones whose families love and care for them to the end, not those who are discarded like rubbish and put down like dogs by their so-called loved ones. Thank you for loving and caring for your parents.
