Euthanasia is getting out-of-control in Canada

Legalization of euthanasia in Canada is setting records, and the founder of a non-profit organization that opposes the practice says there's a reason why.

A Canadian Supreme Court edict legalized euthanasia in June of 2016. Now, the Third Interim Report on Medical Assistance in Dying reports euthanasia increased by 30 percent in just the second half of last year.

"Euthanasia is being promoted; it is being pressured upon doctors to do it to alleviate the conscience rights problem, doctors are being told they are going to have to refer," explains Alex Schadenberg of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC). "We're getting doctors being pressured to be part of it, and it's become something that is seen as a service that must be offered to everyone who is in a certain condition."

Schadenberg compared the figures to European countries that have legalized the practice, and it is growing faster in Canada than it did in those nations. He says it has also shaken some healthcare workers.

"We were told that palliative care would be implemented and improved along with the legalization of euthanasia," the EPC founder recalls. "In fact, the improvements to palliative care we've not seen, and quite a few palliative care doctors have left the system because they're being told, 'Well, you're going to have to either do the act or refer for the act.'"

After all, palliative care doctors provide comfort for the dying as a matter of healthcare, and euthanasia is not healthcare. Schadenberg says it is actually government-sanctioned killing in a system that is designed to cover up any abuses, and it is getting out of control.
