Recently we had a retired United Church minister, who gave a talk on “Dignity in Dying”, which, although it included other topics, was mostly a presentation in favour of MAID.I was approved to speak for this August.
Even though I provided the required information and I was open to questions from any participant, I was informed, today, that I would not be welcome at the Men's Club.
Since the Men's Club neither supports nor opposes MAiD, I understood that not everyone would be happy with my presentation, but I was willing to provide information and I was open to respectful dialogue.
Several years ago I spoke at a Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs. The attendees were clearly divided on the issue and I faced several questions from supporters of euthanasia, but the dialogue was respectful.
I have also spoken at several other civic events and once again there was respectful dialogue.
It concerns me when groups prevent free and open dialogue. I would never be "hateful" or "discriminatory" but clearly the Men's Club is closed to our point of view.
Oh, by the way, Yes, I do oppose killing people.
Thank you so much for all you do to defend life and vulnerable people. You surely dont get enough thanks for what you do. Thank God we still have people defending life. Its tragic when the free exchange of ideas is crushed. What do they fear, why do they work so hard to censor another opinion. Their arguments are weak and cannot hold up, thats why.
ReplyDeleteThank you for defending life and exposing the lack of free speech which doesn’t conform to official position
ReplyDeleteGuelph is a liberal hotbed that espouses all sorts of dubious ideas, while priding itself on being progressive and inclusive. Sadly this doesn’t surprise me.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting that they invited a “United Church” minister to speak to them!!! Haven’t we all read on their website, the “prayers” to God asking for forgiveness of being euthanized, that came out in 2020. I’m sure they have now taken those off their website, as there was a bit of backlash, but we all know there aren’t very many “biblical” United Churches, whose members actually have put their faith and trust in the Word of God and the Son of God for Salvation from sins through Jesus’ sinless life and substitutionary death on the Cross, shedding His blood for the forgiveness of OUR Sins, and Rising on the third day - the firstfruits of the Resurrection!!! The Guelph Wellington Men’s Club HAS MADE THEIR END OF LIFE DECISION as they don’t want to hear from Alex Schadenberg! How disheartening.
ReplyDeleteIt's only through respectful dialogue that any progress can be made in terms of understanding each other. Very sad they allowed a MAID presentation be made but not one from EPC.
ReplyDeleteI think falling back on liberal versus conservative is not the issue. Remember that Fascism and Nazi-ism are so-called conservative ideologies and they utilized Euthanasia more extensively to the level of atrocity as we all know too well. "Conservatives" are very liberal in their interpretation of whatever they are conserving, which is actually very little. It is a "ultra conservative" US President who has been quite prolific in his Eugenics language on every vulnerable group.
ReplyDeletePerhaps our goal is to call out the immorality and amorality of the euphemistic changing of vocabulary to falsely turn killing of human lives into melodramatic work of mercy, when their real goal is to rid their lives of inconvenient people they are too Lazy to help through a crisis. We have to be truth-strong, not do I I into the verbal engineering, and call them out, not fearful of dialogue and constructive confrontation.

Sorry Bill but I don't notice where I or the comments were focusing on liberal vs conservative. As for my comments, I never view this issue from a Liberal vs Conservative divide. I do challenge you on the comment related to Fascism and Nazi-ism. Modern political ideology has falsely defined Nasi-ism as conservative. When analyzing what it was about, what it stood for and what it did, it was clearly not conservative even with a small c. It was in fact a different type of socialism, where the government dictated the policy and had oligarchs, who became very wealthy and powerful, carry it out. In other words, it was a dictatorship but not from a conservative point of view.
